Function
Lead acid battery is a type of rechargeable battery which uses reversible chemical reaction to store energy. It uses a combination of lead plate as its negative electrode and lead oxide as its positive electrode, soaked in an electrolyte consisting of diluted sulfuric acid which can convert the potential chemical energy into electrical energy and back again.
When the battery discharges so as to provide current for ignition or power up the electronic devices, it goes through 2 steps.
Stage 1: the lead ions (Pb2+) are released from the lead plate and diffuse into the electrolyte solution together with an electron.
Stage 2: the diffused Pb2+ ions combine with SO42- of the sulfuric acid electrolyte at the offshore and remain as lead sulphate PbSO4 in the electrolyte solution during discharge.
When the battery goes through the charging process, either by the alternator or an external charger, the lead sulphate PbSO4 resolve at the offshore of the electrolyte solution to become lead ions Pb2+ and sulfuric ions SO42- (step1). The lead ions Pb2+ which are needed for the reaction concentrate at the negative electrode and combine with an electron to form the fine metallic lead of the negative electrode (step 2).
In real life, lead-acid battery becomes unusable in 2 to 3 years even though it is designed to endure usage up to 10 years. The main cause of this is due to sulfation. When the lead sulphate PbSO4 is left in the battery over a period of time due to insufficient charging or self-discharge, it starts to crystalise and becomes a hard sulphate that coats the surface of the electrode. The lead sulphate is non-conductive material and it limits the effective surface area of the electrodes needed for the electrochemical reaction, hence reducing the capacity of battery to produce sufficient power, eventually causing the battery to become fully deteriorated. At the mean time, after the accumulated charging and discharging processes, the size and surface area of the lead paste gets smaller and porosity of the lead paste also decreases, eventually unable to store electric power. When a hydrometer is used to test the concentration of the sulphuric acid in the electrolyte, the specific gravity (SG) reading is low, indicating that the chemistry that makes the electrons have declined and the lead sulphate has stuck onto the lead plate.
When an electrolyte solution is added with organic battery activator during the stage 2 of the Discharge process, the particles of the additive adsorb on the lead plate slow down the diffusion of the lead ions Pb2+ from the lead paste across to the offshore. This causes the number of diffused Pb2+ ions to decrease and reduce the number of lead sulphate PbSO4 generated, hence reducing the cause of sulfation. Organic Battery Activator removes sulfation and also produces a fine metallic lead powder on the negative electrode. These fine metal lead particles are more active than the regular lead paste of the regular material. It has a much longer cycle life, higher current capacity and produces much higher electrode performance.
During the Charging process, due to the presence of the adsorbed organic activator layer, the lead ions Pb2+ diffuses through slowly to the bulk electrolyte solution and hence the concentration becomes higher than the solubility of the PbSO4 in the normal lead-acid battery electrolyte. When the precipitation of the PbSO4 takes place in the concentrated solution, the lead sulphate is amorphous, porous and has high surface area. It is easy to dissolve upon charging and provides a higher electrode discharge capability.

Measure the electronic voltage and the specific gravity (SG) before using Organic Battery Activator to check the health standard of the batteries. Use only quality batteries that meet specifications and are still in working condition. Insert the appropriate number of tablets into each cell once a year based on the Ampere hour (Ah) capacity of the lead-acid battery: 35-75Ah (1 small tablet), 75-130Ah (1 large tablet), 200Ah (2 large tablets). Record the date of application.
Recovery of the battery will be effective in 10 days-4 weeks after the battery is fully charged slowly. Before use, analyze the battery’s health standard using the Hydrometer to determine the specific gravity (or relative density) of the diluted sulfuric acid electrolyte solution and a Voltmeter to determine the voltage difference between the positive and negative terminals. Batteries that are badly deteriorated due to physical damage, heavy sulfation or internal shortage should not be used for recovery.

How long it takes to see the effective of POWERBACK?(Answer)
Depending on the sulfation condition, the effect of the POWERBACK will usually be seen after 10 days – 4 weeks. Quick charge will not be effective for the battery’s recovery. The technique is to charge the battery slowly and fully.
As the Organic Battery Activator is being oxidized gradually at the positive electrode and lose its effectiveness, hence POWERBACK tablets have to be added into the battery cells ONCE A YEAR.
It is recommended to use POWERBACK Organic Battery Activator from the beginning when the flooded lead-acid battery is new and continue adding once a year. With good maintenance, the battery life will last 3 to 5 times longer (up to 8 years), prolonging the replacement cycles and reducing the replacement costs by up to 50%. For “batteries in use” (where 50-80% of its capacity has already being used up), POWERBACK is able to recover and regenerate till 80% of a new battery’s capacity and extend its useful life for a long period of time.
Does the use of POWERBACK improve the quality of the battery?(Answer)
The use of Organic Activator will not improve the quality of the battery. If the quality of the battery produced by the manufacturer failed to meet International Standards for its lead purity, thickness and porosity, it will remain the same and cannot be improved with the product. POWERBACK is only able to extend the battery’s useful lifespan of the battery twice or more.
Does POWERBACK increase the battery capacity?(Answer)
POWERBACK does not increase the battery capacity. It is able to extend the useful lifespan of the lead-acid battery twice or more. With POWERBACK, for a battery with 150Ah capacity, it will be able to function at its maximum capacity but will not become a battery with 200Ah capacity.
Does POWERBACK revive a battery that is near its “end of life”?(Answer)
POWERBACK can still be used for the battery. The remaining life can still be extended at least twice and it is based on the difference between the Standard usage lifespan of the basic battery and the used lifespan. Example: the standard lifespan of a truck battery is 2 years and the used lifespan of the battery is 1½ years. The performance for the battery is (24- 18) months x 2 = 1 year. Perform an equalizing charge to revive the capacity of the battery.
Yes, regular maintenance of the battery is still a MUST. Top up battery water periodically to prevent the electrolyte level from going below the top of the lead plates. Perform full charge of the battery regularly and conduct visual checks to look for sign of loose terminal connections, discoloration of battery water, damage casing and grids. Is POWERBACK suitable for all types of batteries?(Answer)
Wet cell (flooded) battery comes in 2 styles: serviceable and maintenance free. POWERBACK Organic Battery Activator is suitable for serviceable wet cell (flooded) lead-acid batteries where the caps of the battery have to be removed before adding distilled battery water periodically. POWERBACK is not suitable for Maintenance Free battery such as Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) or Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) battery and Gel cell.
In a lead-acid battery, lead (IV) oxide and lead are the active materials on the grid plates. During the discharge process, the sulphate ions of the diluted sulfuric acid in the electrolyte solution form lead sulfate and attach itself onto the electrode. The lead sulfate precipitate formed is finely divided and in amorphous state. It reverts back to lead, lead oxide, sulfate ions easily and return to the sulfuric acid when charge.
Over time, as the cycles repeat, those sulfate ions that are not involved in the charge and discharge processes start to accumulate and crystallize on the electrodes as isolated material of lead sulphate and no longer dissolve easily on charging. This is called Sulfation.
Since not all the lead return to the lead plates and the sulfate ions are not returning back to the electrolyte solution, the amount of usable materials necessary for generation of electricity begin to decline. Sulfation occurs in all lead-acid batteries under normal operation condition. The crystallized lead sulfate clog the grid, impede the charging process and as the crystals get larger, they will eventually crack the plates and destroyed the battery. It also takes longer time to fully charge a sulfated battery and the temperature of the battery is higher.
How is Specific Gravity (SG) in relation to Sulfation of the battery?(Answer)
The specific gravity of a battery increase when charged and decrease when discharged. It is a key performance indicator of a lead-acid battery’s health. A hydrometer is used to measure the specific gravity of each cell to determine the state of charge. A brand new fully charged battery usually has a specific gravity of 1.28-1.3V. Sulfation starts when the specific gravity of the battery falls below 1.225V or the voltage measured is less than 12.4V (for a 12V battery) or 6.2V (for a 6V battery).
